Case Study: Corporate Business Gifts Strengthen Rapport

Shooting For The Stars: Phone Company Uses Promotional Gifts to Enhance Business Relationship

Challenge: Reinforce business relationship between phone company and leading hotels
A phone company was worried that their relationship with the Hawaii hotel industry was on thin ice. The company wanted to put these fears to rest and ensure that its position within the Hawaii hotel industry was secure by reinforcing their business relationships with leaders in the industry.

Solution: High-end promotional items enhance event and reach target audience in hotel rooms
The Hawaii Hotel Association had its quarterly meeting at a prominent hotel known for its beautiful, clear night skies. The phone company recognized that this was the perfect opportunity to reach their target audience and show their appreciation for the hotel industry. The phone company hosted an event called “Starry, Starry Nights,” and to promote this theme telescopes were placed outside banquet rooms so attendees could gaze at the stars. The company also hired local astronomers who were able to answer questions. The guests were very impressed by the event, but little did they know that the best was yet to come.

The event didn't end when the guests went home because the phone company took that extra step that made all the difference to the hotel industry leaders. The company arranged for corporate gifts to be placed in all of the attendees' rooms. When the guests returned to their hotel rooms, they each found a custom embroidered blanket, a constellation chart, and a bottle of wine waiting for them. The company also included a handwritten note which thanked the guests and hoped that they would be able to use the promotional gifts to make future starry nights equally pleasant.

Result: The extra effort makes a big splash with attendees
More than fifty percent of the industry leaders at the conference wrote letters to the company expressing their thanks for the gifts, which they said would always remind them of the company. The phone company was extremely pleased with the results, and they plan to continue their use of corporate gifts.

Make Your Gift Cards Memorable

Many times companies are quick to give out gift cards to clients as holiday gifts. While this may be easy, it's even easier for your clients to forget who gave them the gift card! Once the packaging is discarded, there's no identifying marks on the gift card to remind them of your company's generosity. With gift cards being such a popular holiday gift these days, it's important to differentiate your company from the others who might be sending gift cards as well. In that situation, really who will even remember which gift card came from which company? You may as well send your gifts anonymously! They'd have the same impact.

So how do you create high impact holiday gifts when you still want the ease of sending gift cards? Using promotional gift cards allows for full customization - the whole card is digitally imprinted with your company name and logo, or really with whatever you want! You can create any imprint you'd like, such as "Happy Holidays, from 'Your Company,'" or "Wishing you a sweet New Year, 'Your Company.'" There are a variety of gift cards available, from movie gift cards to music download cards to ringtone cards to dining gift cards. You can create a fully custom program that even includes a customized web site, designed to match your company look, where recipients can activate their cards. That way, not only is the gift card imprinted with your logo and message, but the activation web page will again remind them of who gave them the gift card.

So remember, when planning your corporate gift program, get the most out of your dollars by choosing items that maximize your company's visibility to clients, while providing them with fun and functional gifts that say "thank you" for their business!

Creating a Cost-Effective Corporate Gift Program

You know that sending impressive corporate gifts is a must in the business world, but you have to stick to a budget that's on the small side - what do you do? A great way to get over the hurdle of budget limitations, but still have an effective corporate gift program, is to create tiered gifts that appropriately match each level of customer or client. There are many ways to segment your customer base to create different gift levels. One idea is to break it up based on the amount of money they have either spent or brought in for your company. Another is to segment it by long-standing, loyal existing customers vs. newer customers. A third could be to split them according to the number times they have returned to either purchase from you or use your services, i.e. how much of a repeat customer they are (regardless of dollars spent). What's important is that you make your selections based on what's right for your company.

Once you've created your gift tiers, decide how much you're willing to spend on each group. The top tier should ideally be the smallest group of your most elite customers. You can designate a portion of your budget to these customers so that you are purchasing more expensive items, but in fewer quantities. As you move on to the lower tiers, you'll have increasingly more gifts, but they'll cost less per piece.

Simple example: You have to buy 50 gifts. Without tiers, you could buy 50 gifts for, let's say, five dollars each. You'll spend $250 on your customers gifts. However, if you break up these 50 customers into three groups based on appropriate criteria, you may end up with five customers in the top tier, twenty in the second tier and twenty five in the third tier. The 5 top tier customers could receive gifts priced at $10 each; the 20 second tiers at $5 a piece; and the 25 third tiers at $2 a piece. Your total is then $200 -- $50 less than had you not created tiers in the first place and gave each customer the same gift regardless of the type of customer they are.

Of course this is a very simple example and in most instances there will be a lot more for your company to calculate in order to create a cost-effective program. However, if done right, you'll save money while implementing a high impact corporate gift plan. And of course, remember to imprint any gifts you distribute for a tasteful reminder of your generosity!

Corporate Gifts Good Enough to Eat!

As the saying goes, "the way to a (business)man's heart is through his stomach." Though it doesn't exactly refer to business, I think it is still just as applicable. If you're having a difficult time deciding on a corporate gift that will really wow your clients, try using promotional food items. Food is often overlooked at the high-end level, however there are tons of gourmet choices that come in beautiful (often keepsake) packaging - giving your clients two gifts in one.

One of my favorite edible gifts is the Custom Keepsake Eighteen Brownie Box, complete with a variety of all 12 brownie flavors (such as Toffee Crunch and Mint Chocolate!) as well as two blondies. It also comes packaged in a high-end wooden gift box imprinted with your company name or logo for a memorable presentation. The best thing about promotional food items is that often they are shared, either by people within the office or at home with friends and family, giving your company name even more exposure than a standard desktop item that remains on the desk. When the brownies are all finished, the keepsake wooden box is a stylish item that has a variety of long-term uses (I actually have one holding papers and folders on my desk - much more fashionable than a metal tray!).

As further affirmation that food items make effective corporate gifts, ePromos actually used food items for our holiday gifts to top clients. We chose a two pound (yes two pounds!) milk/dark combo chocolate bar that was etched with our logo as well as industry buzzwords. We then had wooden boxes branded with our logo custom-made to house the chocolate bars. Additionally, we sent out etched bottles of champagne in a mahogany box that was also laser engraved with our logo. The items were all well-received and made quite an impact for their obvious quality and creativity.

Using Corporate Gifts to Increase Referrals

We all know sending corporate gifts to customers is a great way to say thank you for their business. However, corporate gifts are also an excellent way to increase referrals from your existing clients. According to a study done by Baylor University, customers who receive promotional gifts are more likely to provide referrals than those who do not. Specifically:
  • Customers who received a corporate gift were 14% more likely to provide leads than those who did not.
  • Salespeople who provided promotional gifts to their customers received 22% more referrals than those who did not use promotional gifts.
  • 40% of salespeople who used promotional gifts said the gifts were extremely well received by their customers.
Of course choosing the right promotional item as your corporate gift is essential to successfully encouraging referrals. Make sure to choose an item that's appropriate for each level of customers. Luckily, regardless of budget, there is a huge selection of promotional items that have a higher perceived value than their cost, so whatever items you choose as your corporate gifts are sure to impress. Your clients will be left with a good feeling about your company, prompting them to recommend you to their friends, family, business associates, etc., so get ready to watch your referral leads grow!
