Thoughts for Thursday by guest blogger Emily Farmer
What does having a life verse mean? If you are a Christ follower you have probably heard this wording used before. For me its verses from the Bible that you can hold on to when times are tough or trials are many. Its a verse you can live your life by and place all your values on. I was flipping through my Bible the other day and ran across several verses marked life verse. It got me to thinking how many life verses do I have. The more I read, the more I realized that I must have marked so many for all the trials or testing that I have been through. For some reason those verse spoke to me at that time and helped me make it through that difficult season in my life. Therefore they serve as a life verse.
I will have to say my one all time favorite life verse is found in Ps. 28:7, “ The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.” This verse offers so much. It offers strength, protection, help and joy. That's all the things I need on a daily basis.
So how about you? Do you have a life verse one you can claim, read, depend on for strength and courage to make it through your most troublesome time?
Take it one step further and claim a family life verse. Place it around your home, memorize it, make a song out of it. When the whole family can quote it from memory treat yourselves to a family night out to ice cream.

The Waiting Game: Tips to Keep Kids Busy
As a mom of two, I know I'm not alone when I say how challenging it is to keep young kids occupied while doing any sort of waiting. And by challenging, I mean "grit-your-teeth, pull your hair out, I can't believe they're doing that in public" challenging. How many times have you had to stop in to the bank for a quick transaction with a toddler in tow, only to find a line so long you think you made a wrong turn and ended up at the DMV. What to do?? You look at your toddler...at the line...at the very important banking you need to do...at your toddler.... at the line. It may seem like a hopeless situation, but it's not. I'm here to help.
Here are a few of my tried and true tips and ideas to try the next time you find yourself in a queue, a waiting room, on a plane, or any other situation where you may need to keep your little ones quiet and at bay. They've worked for me; I hope they work for you. The basic premise is to keep your child busy. By giving them something specific to do you'll be combating boredom, and may have fun in the process. So, give your toddler a job...Part 1 offers Gross Motor Exercises. In my follow up article I offer some Fine Motor Exercises. And the series will finish with the all-important Cognitive Exercises, to keep your little one thinking all the time.
"Gross" Motor Exercises (exercises for the large muscle groups, not the yucky ones)
Youngsters need to be active. It seems as though they're wired that way. Running, jumping, rolling are all part of everyday life for toddlers - after all, physical and cognitive development is their job. So, since screen time may not be an option, how can we expect them to stand still for any length of time? That doesn't mean you can turn your little one loose in the lobby. But you can encourage the use of large muscle groups, keeping them active but in one spot.
1. Flamingo Stand - have your child extend his/her arms out to the side for balance, then pick up one foot and see how long they can stand on the other foot. Naturally you'll want to make sure you both have a bit of room in case of tips and tumbles. But the goal is not to fall down. The goal is to stay up...counting helps and creates an opportunity for improvement as each time they try they get to higher and higher numbers.
Once your child (and probably you as well) tire of the Flamingo Stand, move on to this one.
2. Little, Big - have your child do basic squats. For those of you who workout, you know how fatiguing it can be to burn those thigh muscles. Your child reaches as tall as she/he can, up on tiptoes, then squats down as little as they can, but staying on their feet. Think duck squat. In fact, you can even give a whispered little "quack, quack" if it helps. You can get big, now get little, as often as you'd like. Be certain not to go too fast.... otherwise you move into jumping, which may require more room than you have at hand.
We adults will probably feel the burning sensation in our legs much sooner than your child; however, you can probably stop at any time and watch your child go, go, go, go.
These are just a couple of gross motor exercises you can do with your child. By the way, why do they call them gross motor exercises? I'm sure you can now think of many others along these same lines. When it comes to waiting on long lines, giving your child something productive to do will make the waiting time pass more quickly. I look for anything to pass the time by. Whether it's Gross Motor, Fine Motor or even just watching digital picture books to exercise your child's brain. You know, whatever it takes. They're only this young once!

The inspiration behind Love That Crochet:
"When I was pregnant with my first child my MIL taught me how to crochet. It wasn't until last year that I decided I wanted to make props for photographers. I've been a photographer for about 3 years now. I just love having photo props for my business. I know how much fun it is to have a beautiful and well made prop. That's what started my love affair with yarn. :) I use many types of yarns: cotton, acrylic, blends, thick, thin, etc. My favorite yarn is yarn that is hand spun and dyed from Etsy fiber artists. Thoughts for Thursday by Emily Farmer
As I wrote in a past post,a few of my close peeps and I were reading through the book of Proverbs. We finally finished that reading. And I have to admit I really enjoyed reading Proverbs form the beginning chapter to the end chapter. I was reminded of some old verses and found some NEW ones I want to apply and memorize. So here is one of my favorite chapters in the book of Proverbs. Nothing like saving the best for last. This chapter talks about the characteristics of a wife. I just love all that she "is". It teaches us so much so bear with me. One day awhile back when I was reading in this chapter God showed me all of these things so I marked them in my Bible. These are all the things I want to be so God will receive the glory for my life.
Here are my take aways from:
Proverbs Ch. 31
v 11 What a wife is trustworthy and greatly enriches her husband
v 12 -27 list all the things she brings:
12 brings good
14 brings food
15 gets up early, plans her day she's organized (Ahhhh my strong point)
16 buys plants and plants them
17 has energy, she's strong, a hard worker
18 she makes a profit
19 always busy
20 helps others with open arms
21 has no fear
25 strength and dignity, laughter
26 wise words (I want to be a women of wise words)
27 watches over her household (homemaker / housewife)
28 She does all these things and she is praised by her husband and children
30 "a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised" I want to be that woman!!
So where does that leave me now well.... I am planning on doing the Ruth study with Beth Moore via her blog and continue to read thru the Bible with Wendy Pope via her blog. Hopefully that won't be an over load for me. We'll see. I encourage you to stay in HIS word and learn something new every day. Maybe read through Proverbs for yourself in your favorite translation or in a different translation. Or you might consider reading though Psalms. Just a suggestion. Most of all continue to grow your relationship with HIM by having fellowship with HIM and praying and listening daily.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks Emily for sharing! I love that chapter too. You turned me onto the Ruth study by Kelly Minter on Beth Moore's blog & I am loving it. I actually am doing it on my own timetable, but I highly recommend it ladies! :)
Today I am giving away a $25 Gift Certificate to The Picture Board!
The Picture Board is a unique & stylish way to display your favorite pictures. It features a simple slide-through railing system that allows for quick & easy picture arrangement. Just slide your pictures in—and within seconds you have the perfect picture display!
The Picture Board currently comes in three different sizes, holding anywhere from five to twenty-four 4x6 pictures. Its simple design allows you to change out pictures as often as you’d like, without the hassle of dealing with traditional frames. And with multiple options to choose from, it’s easy to get just the right look.
The inspiration behind The Picture Board:
"The inspiration for our business actually came from our son and my husband's mom. When our little boy was born, he spent his first few weeks in the NICU. During that time, we wished there was a way to easily display & change out all the pictures we took as we visited him in the hospital each day. About a year later my mother-in-law came to us and requested that my husband make some sort of picture board as a unique and fun way to display all her family pictures. This reminded us of our earlier desire for a nice picture display with an easy way to change out the pictures frequently. With those ideas in mind, and a few ideas we gathered from other displays, The Picture Board came about. After building the one for my mother-in-law, we loved how it turned out and made a few more for other family members and friends. We posted pictures of them on our personal blog, and we got such a good response that we decided to try to sell a few...and they've turned out to be more of a hit than we thought! We've been off to a great start so far, and we're already working on some other products to add to the mix. My husband loves to build, and I love to decorate, so this is the perfect little project for us to work on together!"
Thoughts for Thursday by Emily Farmer
What family values do you try to teach your children? For my husband and myself we try to teach honesty, love, and trust to name a few. The Bible talks about values and character in several different places. I recently ran across a few verses that I think spells it out very clearly and I thought it was worth sharing.
Here are the verses.....
Philippians 4:8-9 says "And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you."
I once read that this verse was called the 4:8 Thinking verse. It's all the the things we should think about and fill our minds with. The more I read it the more I find it to be true.
In Colossians 3:12 we read "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."
Now that is some good stuff to clothe yourself with don't you think? I want to be known to others as compassionate, kind, gentle and patient.
In Proverbs 4:20-26 we find "My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path."
Now that's one packed verse on values. First we are told to pay attention and listen carefully. Then we are advised to hold those things we have heard in our hearts. Next we are to avoid corrupt speech or "trash talk", as I tell my boys. And last we are to look forward so we won't trip over our feet looking back.
I once heard Beth Moore say v. 24 "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." this way: It's my job to guard my heart. No one else will do it for you so you have to do it for yourself.
I have also heard these verses referred to in body parts.
Pay attention to your:
Heart-Values
Mouth-needs to be the values of your heart
Eyes- look away! Self discipline.
And lastly Feet-walk the narrow road.
When you break it down like that its easy to remember isn't it?
The last verse or chapter I want to share I have marked as Family Values. Those values are strong,love,unity and dwelling. I think you would agree these are all values we should teach our children as well as remember for ourselves.
It's from Ps. 133:1-3 "How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony! For harmony is as precious as the anointing oil that was poured over Aaron’s head,that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe. Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion. And there the Lord has pronounced his blessing, even life everlasting."
Talk about you family values around the dinner table and discuss what's most important to your family.
Thanks for sharing Emily. Those are definitley some good things to ponder!
Tuesday's Tip - In The Kitchen
"When a recipe calls for buttermilk, use the powdered kind found in the baking aisle of the grocery store. It comes in a 1lb container and can be refrigerated for up to a year after it's opened. Just follow the directions on the container. There's no need to buy the liquid version, as it won't stay fresh in the refrigerator very long."
Great tip! I rarely use buttermilk for cooking. I did buy some a couple of weeks ago for some homemade buttermilk Onion Rings I made last week (scrumptious by the way!). I have a feeling I'll be throwing out the rest of the buttermilk though. And...I also used to make a wonderful milk bath using that same powdered buttermilk back when I owned The Soy Garden a few years ago. Might want to google that recipe! :)
If you are interested in hosting a giveaway on The Gift Closet please email me. You can click on the "Contact" button at the top of the page. I now have openings in August. Thanks & have a blessed day!
Thoughts for Thursday by Emily Farmer
Everyone has favorite things. Right? Well today I thought I'd share a few of our family's favorite things. We just got back from a family vacation at the beach. We went to Destin, Florida. Despite all the hype that an oil spill was on its way to the beach we thanked God we had a great time with no oil. However it was getting close when we left. If you paid close attention you noticed that they were prepared. The supplies were sitting ready to go to put in place when the oil started to surface.
So getting back to our favorite things to do at the beach...
Riding Go Carts with DoDaddy--aka Grandaddy
"Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart." Ps. 119:111
Watch Sunsets
But you promised me, ‘I will surely treat you kindly, and I will multiply your descendants
until they become as numerous as the sands along the seashore—too many to count." Gen. 32:12
"Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! Let the earth and all living things join in." Ps. 98:7 (NLT)
Eat lots of sea food
"They gave him a piece of broiled fish," Luke 24:42
Swim and most important Relax.
The LORD replied, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." Exo. 33:14(NIV)
It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night,
anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones. Ps. 127:2(NLT)
