Case Study: Fun, Promotional ‘Stress Men’ Drive Web Traffic and Activities Awareness for Carnegie Mellon University

Challenge: How to cost-effectively drive students to a resourceful Web site

Alumni aren’t born at graduation, which is precisely why colleges and universities seek to engage students in various social, intellectual and recreational activities—the goal being to give students a strong, lasting sense of belonging to a campus community and culture. Carnegie Mellon University is no exception: its Office of Student Activities boasts over 225 recognized student organizations designed to impact students’ growth and development while building a sense of Tartan pride.

To accomplish those goals, the Student Activities team at Carnegie Mellon maintains a resourceful Web site where browsers can view a student organization directory and handbook, PR and regulatory information for student organization leadership, as well as an events calendar where students and leadership can easily find and list new and upcoming events. The site was great—a tremendous resource for students and activities leadership—but knowing that ‘build it and they will come’ would not apply, the Student Activities team contacted the promo know-how people.

Solution: Cover the campus with fun and funky imprinted stress balls

Appealing to a student’s inner child and sense of fun, the Activities team selected a blue and white cartoon-like, man-shaped stress ball—a ‘stress man’—imprinted with the Student Activities Web site address. The unique promotion appealed to the team for two reasons: first, because the light-hearted giveaways would surely appeal to students, attract attention and drive traffic to the Web site; and, second, because the balls were inexpensive enough to enable the team to order a large quantity—large enough so that they could freely distribute them throughout campus.

Result: ‘Stress men’ swarm campus; drive awareness and a surge of Web traffic

Students loved the promotion! Soon enough, stress men began to appear all over campus: in the classrooms, in the dorms, in the dining hall, in the library. And everywhere the stress men went, they performed their promotional duty of driving Web traffic for the Student Activities team. The team reported a surge of visitors to the site, as well as an increased awareness of events among the student body. And that’s what we call a promo success!

Case Study: Branded Leather Padfolios Impress Israeli Consulate Conference Attendees

Challenge: Find a promotional product that makes, and leaves, a good impression on attendees of an important conference

The Consulate General of Israel to the Southeast serves as a diplomatic and cultural portal to Israel—right in the heart of Atlanta. The office manages U.S.-Israeli collaborative initiatives in the realms of commerce, academics and the arts, and also provides consular services such as the processing of visas and passports.

More important to the Consulate mission, however, is building and establishing relationships with ministers and others in official capacities; work that happens while hosting and attending myriad conferences and other events. Staff at the Israeli Consulate recently called on ePromos for help in selecting the right promotion for a particularly special conference they would soon be hosting.

Solution: Branded, leather padfolio—but which one?

Consulate staff spoke to ePromos representative Omer Cohen about their choice: an imprinted padfolio that they felt would make and leave a good impression on the large number of attending ministers and other officials. With a solid working knowledge of literally thousands of promotional products available—including nearly 100 different padfolios of varying shapes, styles and sizes—and knowing that padfolios serve a higher promotional purpose than just holding paper, Omer knew right away that Consulate staff—and the gift recipients—might prefer a more luxurious, higher quality leather padfolio for such an important event.

Result: High quality padfolio impresses conference attendees; ePromos’ extra care and attention to detail impresses Consulate staff

Omer was right. Both Consulate staff and conference officials were very pleased with the imprinted padfolios, remarking about their quality, presentation and professionalism. The Consulate staff was also extremely happy with Omer’s extra care and attention to detail, as well as with the free one-day rush service he provided to ensure the padfolios arrived in time for the conference. With such a good experience behind them, staff at the Israeli Consulate has pledged to patronize ePromos for all future promotional endeavors.

Case Study: Thanking Your High-End Clients

The Promo That Almost Wasn't: Quick-thinking and Industry Connections Save a Promotion for a Customer's Customer's Customer

Background: A promotional towel thanks high-end clients

Confused? Let us un-muddy the waters: Signature Designs, a well-regarded design firm, needed a high-end promotional product for its customer—a property management firm that, in turn, wanted to gift its customers—buyers of condominiums.

All the normal back and forth associated with selecting a promotional gift happened without bump or delay: calls were made; ideas were shared; products were researched and presented. Finally, with the guidance of ePromos' Account Executive Linda Page, the Signature Designs team selected a beautiful, luxury towel that would be imprinted and given to the property management firm's new property owners as a token of gratitude and appreciation.

Challenge: A stocking issue stands in the way of success

The order was placed—and that was that; or so everyone involved in the promotion thought. Then, just two days before the towels were due, we received distressing news from the production factory: the towels were out of stock. From the look of things, with the promotion set to begin just two days away, there was no way either ePromos or Signature Designs could deliver on our mutual promise to deliver the towels to the property management firm on time. Or was there?

Thinking quickly, Linda moved production of the towels to a new vendor at a new factory. And using her connections, she arranged for the factory to keep its doors open an extra half day just so the towels would arrive when promised.
Result: The towels are successfully able to improve relations for Signature Designs

And arrive on time, they did. Signature Designs was grateful to Linda for her fast thinking; it not only made ePromos look good; but her efforts helped ensure that the Signature Designs team look good to their customer. The Signature team also reports that the property management firm and its customers were pleased with the end result—and neither ever realized that their towels were the promotion that almost wasn't.

Attendees of the University of Chicago's Cosmic Cartography Banquet are Star-Struck by Creative Promotion

Challenge: How to best leverage a promotional product in keeping with a cosmic conference theme and luxurious banquet surroundings

The University of Chicago's esteemed Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics hosted the 2007 Cosmic Cartography Conference, a four-day event and the first of its kind devoted to the making of cosmic maps and how they enhance our understanding of the Universe. A highlight of the Conference was the Cosmic Cartography Banquet, a fine dining event at the highly acclaimed Italian restaurant Spiaggia, billed as sublime in grandeur and classic in elegance.

To enhance the banquet even further—beyond Spiaggia's formal décor and lavish dishes—and to take advantage of a strategic marketing opportunity, conference organizers decided to leverage a promotional product. But what kind of product? And where, within the Banquet, could it be used?

Solution: Think product AND placement—conference advertising poster replicated on magnets; served on mini-easels set among banquet table dinnerware

For answers to these and other questions, conference organizers turned to ePromos—the promo know-how people. Account Executive Linda Page worked with the conference team to develop a colorful, fun and lasting promotion for banquet attendees—a conference advertising poster replicated on a magnet. Result: The guests love the placeholders

Case Study: Newly Merged Legal Giant Dewey & LeBoeuf Leverages Promotional Gifts to Celebrate Company Milestone

Challenge: Build rapport and establish a sense of common pride internally among newly merged companies

When the law firm powerhouses Dewey Ballantine and LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae merged after behind-the-scenes negotiations, they created what is now the 11th largest law firm in the U.S.: Dewey & LeBoeuf. The new firm, with more than 1,300 lawyers, is also credited with ownership of both the largest New York and London offices of any U.S. firm. Although the firms quickly ended fast flying rumors by confirming rumors of the merger early on, anticipation continued to run high until October 1, 2007—the official date of the merger.

On that date, the new Dewey & LeBoeuf team wanted to present a promotional gift to the new staff to help quickly establish a shared sense of pride and build rapport among the new family members. The plan: to leave a special merger-announcement gift on each employee's desk on the morning of October 1st.

Solution: A gift for every desk—an imprinted notebook and pen in the high style of the new, esteemed law firm!

The gift, we knew, had to be in keeping with both firms' rich heritage and premier reputations; it had to be top-notch. It also had to be functional and highly visible; something law firm employees would be pleased to use before respected clients and potential clients.

The brainstorming began. Before long, the Dewey & LeBoeuf team and we had selected just the right item: a spiral notebook imprinted with the new firm's name on the cover. As an added bonus, each employee would also receive a stylish, high quality pen.

Result: The notebooks help usher in a new era for the firm

On the morning of October 1st, employees throughout the newly-merged firm's 26 offices across four continents arrived to find their new notebooks and pens on their desks—a perfect way to develop a sense of community among the formerly separate teams and to officially announce the merger on its effective date. The Dewey & LeBoeuf team was so pleased with the gifts and employees responses to them that they have since reordered for various events on four other occasions.
